Three‑Tier Roles
/foundations/risky‑play/three-tier
The Three‑Tier Lens explains how students, educators, and systems each shape the field of Risky Play. Every tier reduces cost from its vantage point; together they stabilize safety, dignity, and agency.
Student (Micro)
Agent-driven flux: choosing how to engage, pause, regroup, and re-enter.
Educator (Meso)
Active BRIG fieldcraft: scaffold, clarify, reframe, and support re‑entry.
Systems (Macro)
Predictable routines, inclusive spaces, and dignity-protecting processes.
Student (Micro) — Agent in Flux
- Students choose how to engage (follow/lead) and what to engage with (create/co‑create/join/evolve).
- Movement includes motion and pausing. Pausing under agency = fine; prolonged stillness may signal loss of agency → quick check‑in.
- Boundary‑testing, regrouping, spontaneous planning — all are valid expressions of flux.
Educator (Meso) — Fieldcraft Under Pressure
- Clarify what adult support looks like (suggestions, questions, options — never dictation).
- Permit kids to leverage their resourcefulness: answer questions, offer suggestions, propose options.
- BRIG supervision = active supervision: scanning, tracking play status, engaged presence. (This is not compatible with being on a phone or mentally offline.)
- Re‑entry requires the full BRIG sequence: Brush → Repair → Invite → Govern Interface → Co-solve → Bounded trial → Monitor → Melt away.
System (Macro) — Structures That Reduce Cost
- Rehearsed starting + ending routines (setup/cleanup with kids involved).
- Multiple locales and material sets to support different preferences and access needs.
- Designated spaces for solo or group participation without stigma.
- Systemic planning to eliminate shame: rotations, sign‑up lists, and a friendship/kindness bench for players seeking partners.
Thunderbolt — Three‑Tier Promise
Agency
Every tier lowers cost so kids can choose, change, pause, and re‑enter freely.
Dignity
Supports are tools, never labels; routines prevent shame-based exclusion.
Safety
Structures and supervision intervene only when moves become [bomb]conflict|actions that erode others’ fun or agency[/bomb].
Three Tiers = one ecosystem. Everyone lowers cost; kids keep agency.
