Risky Play – RESET and Re-Entry

Reset & Re‑Entry

/foundations/risky‑play/reset

Reset protects dignity and restores choice.
Use observable thresholds (safety • dignity • agency); keep re‑entry cheap; act on what you can see, not what you assume.
Soft Reset preserves the game. Hard Reset changes conditions. All moves aim to return the learner to practice with dignity intact.

Triggers & Thresholds

Reset when play crosses safety, dignity, or agency lines.
[bomb]Observables|Describe visible actions and impacts; avoid guessing motives.[/bomb]

Soft Reset

Enforce the boundary; offer A/B options; keep the original game intact.
Example: “Pause. Adjust rule X, or play round‑robin for 3 minutes.”

Hard Reset

Change one or more of: game • location • players.
Use when conflict persists or safety can’t be secured quickly.

The Re‑Entry Ladder (BRIG‑Aligned)

1. Guidance

Label what you see; state the boundary; clarify the goal.
Keep tone calm; avoid moralizing; stay specific.

2. Bounded Choices

Offer two good options; time‑box to keep the cost low.
[bomb]Bounded Choice|Short trials help kids test solutions without pressure.[/bomb]

3. Direct Suggestion

Provide a concrete next move (“Try ___ first”).
Use educator judgment to scale support up/down.

4. Fade

Melt away when stability returns.
Re‑enter only if patterns drift toward conflict again.

Pocket Scripts (Fast Recall)

Boundary Queries

• “Is this part of the game?”
• “You good?”
• “___ doesn’t look like they’re having fun—what’s going on?”

Re‑Entry (BRIG)

B — “Hey, what’s going on?”
R — “I hear you. Here’s the impact I’m seeing…”
I — “Try A or B for a few minutes?” • “Want a suggestion?”
G — “How did that work? Ready to adjust?”

Narration Moves

Label → narrate → co‑solve → boundary → invite.
Keep it brief; return the learner to choice as fast as possible.

Roles During Reset

Educator

Scan the field; intervene proportionally; frame options; release.
Maintain strategist posture (Clear Mirror, Calm Water).

Students

Own choices; test options; report results.
Pausing under agency is fine; prolonged stillness → check‑in.

System

Predictable pathways (RPS, coin flip, adult assist).
“Active Rules” visible; archive to “House Rules” when stable.
