Lineage & Positionality

permission → lineage → position → responsibility → carry

This page names where the work comes from, what shaped it, what permissions it carries, and what limits govern how it may be used.

ARF is offered from a position, not from nowhere. Lineage is not decoration. It is responsibility, permission, gratitude, and constraint.

One thread is not the elephant.

A perspective may be valid, meaningful, and real-to-the-person. But a claim about Reality needs more than one thread. Reality exists; accuracy is approached through return-tested triangulation.

I am a practitioner-philosopher of agency, curriculum, and carry; my work asks whether our claims about children, learning, and reality can survive reread, relation, and return.

Place / Land / Responsibility

I write, live, work, and learn from the traditional and unceded territories of q̓ic̓əy̓ (Katzie First Nation), q̓ʷa:n̓ƛ̓ən̓ (Kwantlen First Nation), kʷikʷəƛ̓əm First Nation, Semiahma (Semiahmoo First Nation), and qiqéyt (Qayqayt First Nation), and from the traditional territory of Tsawwassen First Nation.

I was born on the traditional and unceded territories of xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation).

Place is not backdrop. It is one of the threads this work must answer to. This page begins here because acknowledgement is not an accessory to positionality. It is part of the position.

▸ Source & Permission Notes

First mention uses full names where possible. Tsawwassen First Nation is named as traditional territory, not “traditional and unceded,” because Tsawwassen First Nation completed the modern treaty process through the Tsawwassen Final Agreement. Indigenous-language spellings should be checked against the best available Nation-hosted or Nation-approved source before final publication.

Cornerstone

nəc̓aʔmat

One heart, one mind, one spirit — for the benefit of all.

nəc̓aʔmat belongs first because it is not decorative language. It is the cornerstone. It names a way of knowing, understanding, and interfacing with the world that has carried across time, community, relation, and transmission.

I use this teaching with permission, and because it is not mine, it sits in a place of honour. It bears weight. It constrains the framework. If ARF cannot uphold the values it claims to value through its actions, arrangements, and field effects, it loses the right to use those values as cover.

Words are nice. Speak the words, then carry them into the field. Keep only what continues to bear weight.

▸ Source & Permission Notes

Elder wilapiya, Barbara Joe of Tsawwassen First Nation, taught me the protocols for working with sacred knowledge and for seeking permission properly. She also bore witness to that process, which carries its own responsibility: to be able to retell what happened, who was present, what protocols were followed, and whether the work was done properly. I then brought my ask to the late Chief swənnəset, Ken Baird of Tsawwassen First Nation, who granted permission for me to carry my personal connection to his teachings into my work. I use nəc̓aʔmat with respect and honour because it is not mine. It guides my work in a good way: to do work with one heart, one mind, and one spirit, for the benefit of all.

Where I Stand

I stand as Tony H. T. Tsang: a professional educator, facilitator of learning, special education case manager, field practitioner, witness, ally, crisis interventionist, curriculum scholar, reader, writer, researcher, and practitioner-philosopher of agency, curriculum, and carry.

How I Know

Knowing happens through contact, experiment, residue, return, and survival under reality-pressure. A read becomes stronger when it carries under pressure and survives reread.

What Reality Requires

Reality exists independently, but accuracy requires triangulation across situated fields. One thread may matter deeply. It still is not the elephant.

What I Am Responsible For

I am responsible for what I put into the world. Once work enters the field, it may carry, drift, help, harm, or be misused. Release is not neutral.

What I Refuse

I refuse uses that further coercion, undermine authorship, autonomy, or agency, knowingly cause harm, restrict movement, or turn support into hidden control.

What I Do Not Claim

I do not claim universal authority, clinical authority, legal authority, diagnostic authority, or a singular “best way.” Anyone selling “do this and all your problems go away” should be read with both eyebrows raised.

How This Work May Be Used

You may cite and use ARF with Tony H. T. Tsang attached. Interpretations are welcome, but drift must be named. Adaptation, remixing, commercial use, and corpus extension require conversation and clean scope.

Lineage Cards

These are not trophies. They are threads. Some are direct permissions. Some are scholarly influences. Some are resonances. Some are practices I carry carefully because they are not mine to own.

1. nəc̓aʔmat

Authentic being / holistic action / benefit of all

nəc̓aʔmat shaped ARF as a beacon: good work should come from a good place and move toward a good place. If the work creates harm, it must change.

Cornerstone Ethics Micro → Macro

2. Etuaptmumk / Complexity / Currere

Recursive Triangulation / temporal carry / anti-flattening

This is Recursive Triangulation Praxis: tracking what is seen, how it changes, and what emerges across time without collapsing the child, self, field, or system into one cheap read.

Read-Tech Emergence Micro → Macro

3. TRC / FPPL / Institutional Memory

Memory / responsibility / hidden debt

This layer teaches that not seeing a debt does not mean nobody is paying it. Histories live in fields. Unowned cost usually lands on those with the least room to refuse.

Memory Justice Meso → Macro

4. Professional Education / Special Education / Fieldwork

Practice receipts / child-facing constraint / no-one-thing-is-enough

ARF is not smoke from a dragon’s mouth. It is built from decades of human-facing practice, tested frameworks, field receipts, and the refusal to pretend one tool is enough for children.

Field Receipts Children Meso

5. Philosophy / Parfit / Identity / Becoming

Uncertainty / change / internal delta tracking

This layer keeps ARF allergic to finality cosplay. Everyone is becoming. Internal deltas are harder to track than external ones, but they matter because agency can be lost inside the story adults think they already understand.

Identity Flux Micro

6. Rogerian PCA / Trauma-Informed Non-Extraction

Reflection without extraction / compassion without subsidy

Reflect without stealing authorship. Support without purchasing movement. Give the benefit of the doubt, test what carries, and do not confuse capacity with responsibility.

Relation Non-Extraction Micro → Meso

7. SCERTS / Communicative Interface Protocol

Communication as field frontier

Everyone is communicating. The question is whether the field is prepared to receive. When communication bandwidth is limited, support can become subsidy fast if it replaces authorship.

Communication Interface Meso

8. Risky Play / Learning-as-Flux

No failure / refusal as invariant / process over closure

Failure is often counterfeit settlement for adults who want to stop reading. Children move, pause, abandon, revise, return, and become. Process-orientation keeps the field readable.

Play Refusal Micro → Meso

9. Bak Mei / Jap Sang / Embodied Field Pragmatics

Coherence / applicability / arrangement over force

I am an 8th-generation direct disciple in Bak Mei. This lineage helps me understand that form is the what, application is the how, and essence requires both. People are not rocks. They move.

Embodiment Movement Micro → Meso

10. Zen Buddhism / Buddhism

Contemplative posture / perspective under stress

Agency begins with the capacity to refresh perspective under stress. Always be reading. Mindfulness is not delusion; a stale read becomes distortion with incense.

Posture Read Micro

11. Daoism / Confucius / Sun Tzu / Bob Ross

Arrangement / flow / integrity / low-cost movement

Movement is expensive. Force can move a field quickly, but the cost may be integrity. Arrangement preserves movement without bankrupting the people inside it.

Strategy Flow Meso

12. Evidence-Based Practice / Research / Psychology

Pressure-test / uncertainty tolerance / load-bearing constructs

Evidence matters because children deserve frameworks that can survive pressure, not pretty constructs that crumble the second reality sneezes.

Research Test Meso → Macro

13. Reader / Writer / Researcher

Conversation / anti-shrine / capturing live loops

Reading and writing let me catch live field movement long enough to examine it, return to it, and test whether the read still carries. The moment I think I already know, the read starts going stale.

Story Inquiry Micro → Macro

Permission / Scope / Use

You May

Cite and use ARF as-is freely, as long as Tony H. T. Tsang remains attached and the work is not drifted while still being called ARF.

Please Do Not

Do not freely remix ARF and claim it is still ARF. Do not remix ARF and call it your own thing. That is not adaptation; that is theft wearing a tiny hat.

If You Adapt

Ask. I welcome people integrating these ideas into their own work, throwing them at the field, and seeing what carries. If the work drifts, it may cite ARF, but it may not call itself ARF.

If You Are Unsure

Ask. My default posture is generous, but not careless. Commercial or collaborative use is gated by whether the work’s vision, ethics, and direction resonate with ARF.

Closing Posture

One thread is not the elephant.

I carry what I have been given with gratitude, constraint, and responsibility. This work is offered from a position, not from nowhere.

I release this work carefully because anything released into the field can carry, drift, or harm. The point is not to become the structure people depend on. The point is to help arrange conditions where agency can return, movement can be paid cleanly, and people can carry more of their own becoming.

Micro

Self, stewardship, permission, authorship, and compassionate responsibility.
